DeoVR Passthrough Setup: From First Scene to Polished Workflow
DeoVR is the player you recommend to a friend who's never sideloaded anything. It looks like a normal media app. The UI doesn't scare anyone. And the passthrough composite is good enough that for most users, that's the whole story. This guide walks through installing DeoVR on Quest 3 and Pico 4 Ultra, the settings that actually matter for AR / passthrough scenes, the streaming-site integrations that make casual viewing painless, and the places where DeoVR pulls ahead of Heresphere β and where it falls behind.

Why DeoVR matters in the AR ecosystem
Heresphere owns the power-user space. DeoVR owns everyone else. The reason matters: most adult AR scenes are first tested against DeoVR by the studio QA team, because that's what their typical subscriber is using. If a scene plays back wrong in DeoVR, the studio reissues. If it plays wrong in Heresphere, the user files a ticket on the player's Discord. Knowing which side of that line you're on matters for troubleshooting.
Installing DeoVR on Quest 3 and Pico 4 Ultra
Two paths.
Quest 3 / Quest 3S / Quest Pro. DeoVR isn't on the Meta Store. Sideload via SideQuest. Enable developer mode in the mobile app, plug the headset into your PC via USB-C, drag the DeoVR APK into SideQuest, wait for "Success." The same flow as any other sideloaded app β covered in detail in our sideloading guide.
Pico 4 Ultra. Pico's store policy is more permissive than Meta's β DeoVR is actually on the Pico Store in most regions. Direct install, no sideload required. That's one of the small wins for Pico over Quest if you're allergic to sideloading. Coverage in the Pico 4 Ultra guide.
First launch and account setup
DeoVR opens to a clean main menu β local files, your accounts, the DeoVR meta-catalog. You can use the player without making an account; the account just persists watch history and favourites across reinstalls.
Permissions: grant storage access and network. If you skip network, the streaming-site deeplinks won't work and you're stuck with local-only playback. Passthrough permission is granted at the system level (Quest 3 β Settings β Apps β DeoVR) and DeoVR will prompt you to open that menu the first time you try a passthrough scene.
Passthrough settings to change
DeoVR has fewer dials than Heresphere on purpose. The ones that matter:
- Passthrough mode: Alpha. Settings β Playback β Passthrough Mode β Alpha. The default is sometimes "Auto" which falls back to chromakey on misdetected files. Force Alpha and you'll get the cleaner composite on properly-encoded scenes.
- FOV correction off unless you know you need it. DeoVR's FOV correction is well-meaning but introduces a subtle barrel distortion at the edges. Most studios encode 180Β° scenes that don't need correction.
- Sharpening: low or off. The default sharpening on Quest 3 over-emphasises skin texture. Drop it to low. Off is fine for AV1 scenes; HEVC at lower bitrates can use a small amount.
- Room anchor: per-scene. Same idea as Heresphere β the scene's positioning persists across sessions. Off by default in some DeoVR builds; turn it on.
Streaming-site integration
This is DeoVR's killer feature. Open any major adult streaming site in the Quest browser, find a passthrough-tagged scene, tap "View in DeoVR." The player opens and the scene streams directly β no download, no SMB, no file naming gymnastics. Studios that integrate well in our testing: VR Conk, VRBangers, SLR Originals, RealJamVR, SinsVR, VirtualTaboo.
The catch: streaming quality is capped by the studio's CDN. Sites that serve AV1 at decent bitrates look fine. Sites that still serve HEVC at 25Mbps for a 4K-per-eye scene will look mushy on skin tones. For the very top of the quality envelope you still want to download and play locally.
Catalog-level browsing is in our studio guide; the technical side of streaming setup lives in the PC-streaming piece.
Local files and SMB
For downloaded scenes, DeoVR reads from the headset's internal storage (Movies folder by default) and from SMB shares on your local network. The SMB setup is identical to Heresphere's β point DeoVR at smb://192.168.1.x/scenes, authenticate once, the share persists.
DeoVR is slightly more permissive about file naming than Heresphere. If your file is justscene01.mp4 with no metadata in the name, DeoVR will guess (usually correctly) at FOV and stereo layout. Heresphere will assume defaults that may be wrong. That's one of the small reasons DeoVR feels friendlier on day one.
Where DeoVR wins and loses
Quick honest split:
DeoVR wins on: first-time setup, UI, streaming-site integration breadth, Pico Store availability, scene metadata auto-detection.
Heresphere wins on: codec edge cases, alpha-channel format support velocity, per-scene IPD overrides, room anchor precision, settings depth.
The honest workflow most users land on after a month: DeoVR for streaming sessions where you don't want to think, Heresphere for downloaded high-bitrate AV1 scenes from studios that ship cutting-edge alpha encoding. The two players coexist; you don't pick a side.
FAQ
Is DeoVR free?
The player is free. Streaming-site integrations are part of paid memberships on individual studio sites β DeoVR itself doesn't charge for playback. A premium DeoVR account exists for users who want the meta-site catalog and curation features, but you can play any locally-stored or self-hosted scene without it.
DeoVR vs Heresphere β which one should I use?
Use both. DeoVR has the cleaner UI, smoother first-time setup, and better integrations with streaming sites. Heresphere has more codec controls, faster support for new alpha-encoding formats, and tighter room anchoring. Most heavy users keep both installed and switch per scene depending on which player the studio tested against.
Does DeoVR support alpha-channel passthrough properly?
Yes. DeoVR added solid alpha-channel composite in late 2024 and has kept pace with format changes since. The detection is automatic β file with alpha metadata renders cut-out against your real room. Without alpha, you get the rectangular video plane and that's a file problem, not a DeoVR problem.
Can DeoVR run on Vision Pro?
Browser-only via WebXR. There's no native visionOS app, Apple blocks adult software at the App Store level, and sideloading on Vision Pro is too brittle for a player developer to support. If you want native DeoVR you need an Android-XR headset β Quest 3, Quest 3S, Pico 4 Ultra, or a few other niche devices.
How do I stream scenes from a streaming site directly into DeoVR?
Most major adult streaming sites have a 'View in DeoVR' button on each scene page. Tap it in the headset browser and DeoVR opens with the scene queued. Studios like VR Conk, VRBangers, and RealJamVR integrate well. Heresphere has equivalent deeplinks but DeoVR's are usually the first to be added by site operators.
