Skybox is a competent local-file player with basic passthrough support added in 2025. It plays standard 180° passthrough scenes fine but can't handle complex alpha-channel masking. Useful as a tertiary player but not a first choice in 2026.

Players to skip

• Pigasus VR Player. Quality VR player but its passthrough support is rudimentary and hasn't been updated meaningfully in 2026.
• Quest's built-in Meta TV / Browser. See the "why you have to sideload" section above — these don't expose the passthrough API to AR content.
• Anything from Steam. Quest 3 can run SteamVR via Quest Link, but the passthrough pipeline doesn't pass through that bridge — you lose the AR capability.

How to sideload Heresphere or DeoVR

1. Create a Meta developer organization. Free. Sign up at developer.meta.com, create a "self-hosted" organization, link your headset to it. Takes 5 minutes.
2. Enable developer mode on your headset via the Meta Horizon app on your phone (Devices → your headset → Developer Mode).
3. Install SideQuest (sidequestvr.com) or Mobile VR Station on your computer or phone. SideQuest is the more featureful option.
4. Download the APK from the player's official site (Heresphere from its Patreon-linked download, DeoVR from deovr.com).
5. Drag the APK onto the headset using SideQuest. The app appears in your Quest's "Unknown Sources" library.

Tips that make passthrough actually feel good

Lighting

Quest 3's passthrough cameras boost contrast in dim rooms — at the cost of color accuracy and noise. Adult content benefits from soft, even room lighting more than most uses. Add a single warm bulb behind you.

Scene placement
